| Vecna Awarded DoD Phase
I SBIR Grant for Dynamic Patient Scheduling College Park, MD, March 31, 2005 - Vecna Technologies, Inc announced today that the company has won a $100,000 Phase 1 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) award from the Department of Defense (DoD) for dynamic patient scheduling and resource allocation. "The scheduling and coordination of patients and resources is inherently complex, due to the different pathways of the patient during the course of medical treatment," said Deborah Theobald, CEO of Vecna. "Because of the unpredictable nature of delivering care at a medical facility, schedules and resources must be managed dynamically in order to provide optimal services." Current software systems for schedule and resource management in the
market today do not perform well when they are in environments that
changes frequently and are required to make constant updates. The proposed
research will be to develop a new computerized system that makes adjustments
dynamically. The core technology used for the research will implement
genetic algorithms, a highly effective artificial intelligence tool
for rapid learning and problem solving. There is strong commercial potential
with this research, since dynamic scheduling and resource allocation
is also a significant problem in areas other than health care. TOP
