| Vecna Wins NSF Phase I
SBIR Award for RFID Research College Park, MD, March 31, 2005 - Vecna Technologies, Inc. announced today that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the company a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant for patient tracking in hospitals using Radio Frequency Identifier (RFID) technology. "The application of RFID technology offers the promise of improving patient safety in hospitals by reducing medical errors and infection outbreaks," said Deborah Theobald, CEO of Vecna. "In light of recent media attention on patient safety and on mitigating hospital-acquired infections, there is significant potential for an RFID patient and infection tracking system." The need for higher standards of patient safety and effective infection surveillance in health care facilities is well recognized. Every year billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives are lost to infections acquired in a health care facility. The research effort will develop software for determining the source of infections, which will allow hospital staff to intervene and prevent further incidents of infection. This will enable hospital staff to better address the outbreak and prevent future occurrences, saving lives and money. The SBIR Program is a highly competitive research funding system by
the Federal Government specifically for small businesses to conduct
innovative research and development work. Phase I SBIR awards are for
a six-month feasibility study and are awarded up to $100,000. TOP
